SAVING WETLANDS
Our Maui wetlands are rapidly disappearing, so we need to take action to prevent our last wetlands from destruction. Our Maui wetlands are vital for habitat, flood mitigation, and protection against the adverse effects of climate change. Save the Wetlands Hui has a simple mission, to bring the community together to help identify, conserve, protect, and restore, Maui’s remaining wetlands, and to educate the public about the critically important role that wetlands play in the ecosystem. Our county-sponsored mission is also intended to inform the County and other administrative decision-makers about Wetlands so that better planning decisions can be made going forward that are less harmful to Maui’s remaining wetlands and the ecosystems that they support.
Our first phase project in 2021 focused on the Kēōkea-Waiohuli corridor of Kula Kai (roughly the area known as middle Kīhei). Phase two in 2023 expanded the study area to all of South Maui, and Phase Three in 2024 will cover larger areas of the island, and we plan to eventually study all of Maui County.
