Text Box: What is the W. P. O.?

Since 1993, the Wetlands Preservation Organization (WPO), a student organization at the Haskell Indian Nations University, has led a successful campaign to halt the proposed construction of the South Lawrence Trafficway (SLT) through the Haskell-Baker Wetlands. WPO and local supporters continue their efforts to protect this fragile wetlands ecosystem.

W. P. O. Mission Statement

Preservation of the Haskell-Baker
Wetlands with emphasis on cultural, historical, ecological, and spiritual significance. The essence of our beliefs is the land. Chief Joseph said, “The measure of the land and the measure of our bodies are the same.” Our spiritual traditions, concepts and values are all embedded in the land—WPO.
