Who Cares?

To the editor:
Well, here we go again. We sorely need the South Lawrence Trafficway.
It makes no difference who we have to bulldoze under; we gotta have it.
Once, a long time ago, a corporal in the Army had made a trip he didn't
like and so he wrote a letter to his grandchildren. Part of it was, "I
watched those little Cherokee children wave their little hands goodbye to their
homes as they left Tennessee and off to the west into they had no idea what.
On that trip into Oklahoma, thousands perished. One day someone is going to
have to answer for those silent graves." Now, that was only for the
Cherokees; Creeks, Chickasaws, Choctaws and Seminoles also suffered a
long trek from the East. There were thousands made homeless in the West.
Those people worked hard and recovered somewhat. Haskell Institute
built the first lighted football stadium in the Midwest in 1925 and became a
powerhouse with Rabbit Weller, John Levi and many others. Lawrence has
enjoyed using Haskell Stadium for many years for high school games.
There is the Haskell Indian Nations University out there where we have to build
the SLT. Who cares?
