To the editor:

    So much for equanimity as, coffee in hand, I opened Wednesday's
Journal-World to be greeted by the headlines, "Feds OK wetlands SLT route"
and "Coal-fired plants still possible . ."

    Bob Johnson, who apparently is "delighted" with the South Lawrence Trafficway
report, perhaps can give us suggestions for the size of the trafficway. Keep in
 mind the cities across the country that have been expanding roadways from two lanes
to four, eight, 12 and counting. You should plan wisely for future growth and build a
visionary 10- or 12-lane beast to accommodate traffic from surrounding development.

    Don't forget the existing segment needs additional lanes according to those who know
these things. And while y'all are at it, firmly support the campaign to build a
business park up north to fuel the growth we're told is needed for survival. You might
think about including plans to have plain dirt somewhere to grow stuff so farmers have
something to do and don't add to unemployment figures that drag down the economy.

    In the meantime, Kansas lawmakers are doing their thing, writing laws to support their
viewpoint. This is good, really, since the whole thing will end up in the courts, where
science and common sense will hopefully prevail and set standards for the country. I
had to laugh, finally, at the Sunflower CEO's argument that "Carbon dioxide is a substance
that sustains life." Mr. Watkins should send his résumé to the White House.
